He was the third son of four siblings. Between 1925 and 1934, he alternated work in the mines with trips to Lima. In 1932 he began studies specializing in sculpture at the Escuela Nacional Superior Autónoma de Bellas Artes. That same year he painted a canvas called Huaylarsh Wanka that was exhibited in 1938 at the \"Salón de los Independientes\" and won a prize of a thousand soles of gold at the time.
